Chemistry 1412-63400 Determination of Acetic Acid Concentration in Vinegar Using Titration 580314 The goal of this LAB is to accurately determine the concentration of acetic acid in commercial vinegar. Titration, a common laboratory chemical analytical procedure is used to determine the concentration. During the titration, acetic acid is neutralized with a solution of sodium hydroxide. The titration is performed three times and the average molarity of acetic acid is determined. The percent of acetic acid in vinegar is calculated from the molarity. In Activity 1, the percent of acetic acid in the included vinegar sample is determined. In Activity 2, a different sample of vinegar will be used and titrated. Activity 3 is a paper activity to calculate the pKa of the acetic acid based on sample pH data that is provided. Materials Syringe, 10 mL 10-mL graduated cylinder 25-mL Erlenmeyer flask Electronic balance Disposable pipet Plastic cup, 1.25 oz Vinegar, acetic acid solution Phenolphthalein indicator solution, 1% Sodium hydroxide solution, 1M Plain sheet of white paper Vinegar sample Video Activity 1: Titration of Vinegar with Sodium Hydroxide 1. Place the 10-mL graduated cylinder on the electronic balance. 2. Tare the balance. 3. Dispense ~5 mL of vinegar into the graduated cylinder with a plastic pipet.
