BUS 379 Public Relations Starbucks and Gun Policy | Case Analysis The importance of company reputation has always been understood by public relations teams, but its significance is increasing rapidly in today’s world; social media outlets allow news to spread to larger audiences in short amounts of time, creating unprecedented transparency that holds organizations accountable for their decisions and impact on society. In 2012-2013, Starbucks encountered an unavoidable conflict when communities demanded the company to take a stance on gun control, and they were forced to confront the political issue in a strategic manner in an attempt to uphold their reputation. In response to violent incidents in the country involving guns, and growing concern over gun violence and open carry gun laws, several companies have banned guns from their stores, including Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and Peet’s Coffee, (Wilcox 269). Starbucks was called upon by gun control advocates to take a similar stance. Starbucks clearly communicated that they are not law makers and their decision not to ban guns from their stores was simply an effort to follow legislation. At the same time, open carry gun supporters began to organize meet-up events at local Starbucks locations because Starbucks had not banned guns from their locations. The Huffington
