Surname-1 Student’s Name Professor’s Name Course Date Corporates and the United States Democracy In the film The Story of Citizens United v FEC: Why democracy only works when people are in charge, Annie Leonard attempts to inspire Americans to step up and retain their power and democracy back from the corporates. She faults the corporations for the recent government leniency on laws, regulations and policies guarding the corporations’ activities that affects the people. In 2010, she reveals that the court allowed the corporates to spend however they want on political expenditures on the basis of upholding the freedom of speech, in the Citizens United v FEC case. The Citizens United group allows for inequality in the political setting as it advocates for unfair competition among the presidential candidates. Therefore, some candidates who would better represent the nation along with the majority of the public end up marginalized in the nation’s elections and government participation.
