Amy Nguyen Mr. Aguiar AP Psychology 9 August 2016 #28: You’re Getting Defensive Again! Field of Study: Psychopathology Sigmund Freud theorized that id, ego, and superego are included in an individual’s personality. The three work together to make the defense mechanism. Simple biological needs like intercourse, hunger, and thirst compile id, which altogether is classified as the pleasure principle. Id can be hazardous to surrounding people if it is not under control because its contents are dark and should not be conveyed. To prevent the id from escaping, an individual’s ego found safe alternatives for the id to satisfy itself. The superego, also known as the conscious, took into consideration what society wanted and what it does not. In short, the ego controlled the id with the superego supervising. Freud and his daughter Anna, in this study, created the concept of defense mechanisms after years of observations. This study did not follow scientific methodology.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
