2. James Pendergast is saying how he never tricked anyone to work for him or do anything for him. It was favors he was cashing in and having friends to call on to do his bidding. He is speaking from the guilded age, a time where life seemed prosporous on the surface but if you even took a second of a closer look people were living in small apartments with entire families and wages were incredibly low. During that era there were accusations of crooked owners of companies that thrived on the low income of their workers. He was known for gaining power from the bottom of the barrel by doing favors for others. African Americans 1. African americans in the united states wanted equality and W.E.B. Du Bois spoke on that saying that one of the most fundimental ideals was that all men are created equal even though when the consitiution was written the founding fathers meant "all white men are created equal." More specifically "rich white men". Du bois was calling on how it was written like that, making the people in power regret what they wrote years and years ago. The time period was after
