Medical assistants (MAs) are allied health professionals who generally support routine clinical and
administrative duties under the direct supervision of a healthcare professional, often a physician (Gray,
Harrison, & Hung, 2016).
Stephanie the medical assistant (MA) is practicing outside of her scope of
practice, essentially she is practicing medicine by writing prescriptions.
Stephanie MA is permitted to
taking prescription renewal requests from patients and pharmacies but in this scenario that is not the
case.
It is important for the provider to investigate what had happened and if this was intentional or
permitted by another provider.
It sounds as if Stephanie believes she is qualified to prescribe medication
and did this under a provider’s license that was not consulted.
Stephanie’s actions are unethical and can
lead to legal implications to the practice.
