Shadasia Bell ED 312 Dr. Cooper January 29, 2015 Keeper of the Night Paper Keeper of the Night is a book about a family in Guam who just lost their mother to suicide. This book shows a young teen’s daily struggle to keep her and her family life together after such a devastating loss. Isabel, the main character and narrator of Keeper of the Night , is a very strong character. At the tender age of thirteen, she has to protect and take care of her family after her mother commits suicide. Her father moves the family to Tamuning, to his sister Minerva’s house, after her mother dies. Isabel wants to go back to her home in Malesso, she says, “We’re stupid staying in Tamuning while our lives take place in Malesso” (pg. 10-11). Olivia, Isabel’s younger sister, has been wetting the bed since their mother died. Isabel places towels under Olivia before she goes to bed and hides the wet towels and Olivia’s wet nightgown, so that Auntie Minerva does not see. Minerva’s house is covered in plastic to keep it in good condition. Isabel is trying to protect her little sister from Minerva because Minerva would probably be upset if she knew that Olivia has been wetting the bed. One night when Isabel was washing the dishes, Minerva tells Isabel that she must be careful because she looks exactly like her mother, and that beauty can make life seem easy at first. If life was so easy for Isabel’s mother, then she probably would not have committed suicide. Isabel gets very upset and she is tempted to drop Minerva’s precious
