Cha pter 1 REAL NUMBERS Counting Numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Whole Numbers: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Integers: . ., -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, . . . Rational Numbers: set of all Fractions where you have: Integer on top (Numerator)EX. 3/4, -7/2, 1/5 Integer on bottom (Denominator) NUMBER is a Counting Number which is ONLY divisible by 1 and itself.5 (a Prime #)vs. 6 (NOT a Prime #)5 = 1 X 5 6 = 1 X 6 or 6 = 2 X 3 Factor 18 into a product of prime numbers.18 / \ 9 2 Simplifying/Reducing Fractions Simplify/Reduce the fraction 15/25. 15 (factors into) 3 X 5 (cancel the common factor of 5) = 3 25 (factors into) 5 X 5 (cancel the common factor of 5) 5 Proper (typical) Fraction: where the bottom is bigger than the top (ex. 3/5, -17/21) Improper Fraction: where the top is bigger than the bottom (ex. 5/3, -21/17) Mixed Number : consists of a Whole Number part and a Fraction part ABSOLUTE VALUE : The ABSOLUTE VALUE is the distance of a number from 0. Examples: Find the absolute value of 7 and – 7. | 7 | = 7 and | -7 | = 7 (denoted by | |) is a distance, it is ALWAYS a positive number.
