Lindsay Samakow January 28, 2008 Topic Memorandum – Self Mutilation The topic I have selected to focus on is self mutilation. Self mutilation is a general term for a variety of forms of intentional self-harm without the wish to die. Cutting one's skin with razors or knives is the most common pattern of self-mutilation. Others include biting, hitting or biting oneself; picking or pulling at skin or hair; burning oneself with lighted cigarettes, or amputating parts of the body. The purpose of my speech will be to raise awareness about this relatively un- talked about issue. My personal motivation for writing and presenting this topic is that I have a very close friend who self mutilates and I’m sure many other college students know someone who does as well. I just feel many people are unaware or uninformed of the seriousness of this issue. I feel that I am a credible speaker on this topic because it has directly affected me personally, and I plan on researching further to enhance my knowledge.
