Cindy Osowski Recitation 1. Read carefully Document 1 "The Achievements of Augustus" (pp. 59-69) as an expression of imperial self-promotion. How did Augustus manipulate his public image and to what end? *He put emphasis on his military, administrative, and financial contributions to the society. *He wished to be remembered as a generous patron of the state who had restored domestic peace and prosperity after nearly a century of civil conflict. He declined triumphs in his honor and fulfilled the vows he made in each war. *He talks about his achievements such as freeing the whole city from the fear and present danger of starvation, paid cash bonuses to soldiers whom he settled in their hometowns after discharge (pg 64), rebuilt the capitol and theatre of Pompey, he replaced all the temples of all the cities in Asia which his former enemy had looted and taken for his private use. *He brought peace to the Alps, added Egypt to the empire of the Roman people.
