Early thinkers • Bishop usher (1581-1656) pinpoints moment of creation as Oct 10, 4004 B.C • Carol Von Linneaus-Swedish- 1700’s- taxonomy (science of classification) Pre-Darwinian Thinkers • Lord Buffon- 1700’s: Mutability of Species (maybe earlier life forms that changed) • Georges Cuvier (1769-1832); immutability-Catastrophism- flood killed the animals, agreed with Noahs. • James Hutton- Uniformitarianism, Scottish geologist that pruposed uniformitarianism (evidence of earthquakes, sea beds (that the earth governs thew same way it did for years)) • Thomas Malthus (1766-1834)- struggle for existence….boom and bust cycles of species. Jean-Baptiste Lamark (1744-1829) lived in Darwins time, famous scientist of his time- Inhertiance of Acquried characters- characteristics you acquire you will pass it on to your kids. Ex. Tanning and passing tan on to the kids…not true. Charles Lyell (1797-1875) “Principles of Geology” book…that Darwin carried with him....
