A chain of mass m and length l is lying on a frictionless table. A segment of the chain, length y 0 , hangs off the edge of the table. You are holding the end of the chain which is on the table, and at t = 0, you release the chain with zero initial speed. What is the equation of motion, y ( t ), of the end of the chain? Don’t worry about the chain hitting the floor, or times after the entire chain slips off the table. 5. Two identical balls of mass m are attached via a pair of identical springs (spring constant k ) and looped around a frictionless cylinder of radius R . The top ball is then displaced along the cylinder by a distance d , while the bottom ball is held fixed. At t = 0, both balls are released with zero initial speed. What are the resulting equations of motion, x ( t ), for each of the balls?
