Beer’s Law Abstract: A series of standard solutions containing Allura Red dye was tested using absorption spectroscopy to verify the amount of dye present at maximum wavelength. Using a parallel dilution, five standard solutions for each dye were made from a stock solution with known concentration. The standards were used to create a calibration plot to compare the results of the Allura Red measurements and help perform calculations. From these calculations, Allura Red was determined to have a molar absorptivity of 2.383x10 3 L/mol*cm. Although this value had a percent relative deviation around 89% from the given vale, the mostly linear calibration plot did follow Beer’s law. Introduction The main objective of this experiment was to verify the molar absorptivity of a dye at its maximum wavelength using absorption spectroscopy.
