Myth and CulturePrimitive CulturesThe role of mythology in Native America must take on a central role in understanding a NativeAmerican culture, including their religious beliefs, their origin myths, creation myths, andspiritual leanings. From the myths, stories, and religions, we come away with a greater understanding of theculture of different groups and culturesThe making of myths is universal among human cultures. In fact, myths are a necessity. Primalgroups find them vital for the maintenance of the patterns of group life.Native Americans are ancestors of very ancient cultures, perhaps dating back over 13,000 yearsof longer. The power of myths and legends are part of a cultural phenomenon that has kepttribes connected to a world larger than themselves.Another interesting phenomenon about studying mythology among indigenous groups is that wefind many similar stories. When comparative studies are emphasized, we may be able to see anumber of similarities among groups that leads us back to an ancient beginning.Human societies all have one thing in common: we all have myths and origin stories, as well ascreation stores. The Native Americans are no different, and when we take a closer look at theirmyths, we see similarities in our own cultures.RenewalOver and over again, once we explore the nature of primitive society, we see the act of“renewal” as a central focus of their lives, religion, and spiritual beliefsThe Maya believed that they must give blood back to the Gods because the Gods created themusing their own blood. The Aztecs believes that the sun would not rise each day if blood had not been sacrificed. Theseacts all symbolize birth, creation, and renewal.Mythology DefinedMythology, refers to a body of stories that attempt to explain the origins and fundamental valuesof a given culture and the nature of the universe and humanity
