Running head: ALLIANCE SUPERMARKETS 2Introduction Alliance Supermarkets uses a point-of-sales (POS) system to track its inventory (Vonderembse, and White, 2012). The POS system help management remain proactive in monitoring inventory through automation which accurately stores information in the computer’s database throughout the inventory’s entire life cycle. The POS system is where transactions are finalized between customers and business organizations. The system uses a laser scanner to read the universal product code of each item, when customers are finalizing their purchases (Vonderembse, and White, 2013). The UPC uniquely specifically identifies products and can update inventory records using a perpetual inventory system (Vonderembse, and White, 2013). The POS system can help the CIO reduce costs while providing better service to its customers, by storing information from each customer, tracking important sales data, and providing alternative products at a lower costs. By obtaining individual customers’ purchasing behavior, the CIO can identify store patterns from each of its locations. This gives the company opportunity to provide this information to suppliers and manufactures concerning customers’ preferences about their products and how to differentiate their products from similar products. The POS system can provide new and innovative ideas for the CIO. By providing updated inventory records, the CIO can ensure proper inventory levels that would prevent stores from running out of products that may be in high demand for customers.
