PA History: Day 1 (Brief overview of class structure, and a short timeline of PA history) -Lumber exploited during the beginning of the 20 th century for use in a wide varity of ways. -Gettysburg is cited differently now by some (Importance in the grand scheme of things) 1682-1755: Pennsylvania had no history of defense (Very rare for the time) 17 th century- Pennsylvania was the head of religious freedom of the world PA “center” of American colonies 18 th century: Robert Morris played an important role in commercial development of Pennsylvania 19 th century: Lumber, coal, oil and agriculture used heavily, some say in excess (eventual depletion ofsome resources including large trees, coal patches and oil resevoirs) PA went through “deindustiralization”, booming industrial strength, then a dying off of industry to overseas locations where production can be cheaper Many of the people who made a living off of PA history actually lived outside of the state. --
