Soc 140 Discussion – Oct 18, 2007 Koo - Structuralist – main point is that 3 rd world countries are class divided (underdeveloped class system) because they have an underdeveloped economy, therefore they have a weak state - Pluralist – main point is the underdevelopment of democratic culture, because they have an underdeveloped economy, therefore they have a weak state - (education and a capitalist state were the two solutions of this model.) - Koo’s model – bringing in different factors, main argument is that you can’t talk about underdevelopment in the third world by just talking about one factor, can’t just talk about class, state and world system (interaction of different countries, what happens in one country affects others, world system theory – basically talking about capitalist economic systems, the countries did not enter this capitalist system at the same time, there is a hierarchy among them, periphery countries provide raw materials for poor countries to flourish (third world countries) mainly talking about how countries are interrelated
