Bar Graph Educational Attainment
Open the INDIVIDUALS data set from the class web site.
Highlight all the data (you could click the empty cell in the upperleft corner of the spreadsheet
above 1, to the left of A).
Data→ Sort→ then sort the data by Sex (ascending)
(1=male, 2=female)
Insert these labels in cells G2:G7.
Widen the column if necessary.

hs
some college
college
advanced
Insert these bin values in cells L2:L7.

Highlight H2:H7.
Hit F2.
In cell H2, type “=frequency(C2:C8596, L2:L7)”.
Hit CONTROL + SHIFT + ENTER.
C2:C8596 is the range of education values for males.
L2:L7 tells Excel the categories we are
interested in are 16.
The count of males in each education group should be displayed.
Highlight H10:H15.
Hit F2.
In cell H10, “=frequency(C8597:C16384, L2:L7)”.
Hit CONTROL + SHIFT + ENTER.
The
count of females in each education group should be displayed.
Click on H8.
Hit the Auto Sum icon (sigma) and hit Enter.
That should give you the total
number of males in the data set (8595).
In cell I2 enter “=h2/8595” and hit enter.
This gives the
fraction of males that never attended HS.
Copy cell I2 and paste from I3:I7.
Highlight the
fractional values and click on the decrease decimal icon until the numbers are expressed to three
decimals.
Click on H16.
