The article “Western International Law and China’s Confucianism in the 19th Century. Collision and Integration” by Yang Zewei, is roughly about China’s ideological change from believing that it was the one world power, to a more modern and western point a view, that other countries could be viewed as equals on the global scale. Zewei states that China regarded itself as the ultimate authority and that the Celestial Empire of China held supremacy over all other nations, and that these other nations should be viewed as “barbarians” or “dependents”(287). Zewei goes on to make statements of the Celestial Empire’s views of Chinese grandeur, and that tributary countries were fortunate to have influence of China (288). This Chinese world view also stated that the Emperors should treat these feudal countries with kindness, in order to win their hearts
