Pg.3 Weather-is defined as the state of the atmosphere at some place and time, described in terms of such quantitative variables, as temperature, humidity, cloudiness, precipitation and wind speed and direction. Meteorology- is the study of the atmosphere and the processes that cause weather. Climate- weather conditions at some locality average over a specific time period. Pg. 4 Climatology- is the study of climate, its controls, and spatial and temporal variability NOAA- A valuable source of local weather information Pg. 5 Pressure systems- are two types, highs (or anticyclone) and lows (or cyclones) Air pressure- the weight per unit area of a column of air that stretches upward from the earths surface to the top of the atmosphere Pg. 7 Air mass- is a huge volume of air covering hundreds of thousands of square kilo. That is horizontally relatively uniform in temperature and humidity. Pg.8 Front- a narrow transition zone between air masses that differ in temperature, humidity, or both. Pg. 11 Goes- orbits the planet at a rate that matches earth’s rotation and in the same eastward direction so that it is always positioned over the same spot on earths surface directly below the satellite, is essentially on the equator POES- a satellite whose orbital plane passes near the North and South poles. Pg. 12 Visible satellite image – image processed from radiometers onboard a satellite that sense visible solar radiation reflected or back-scattered from surfaces in the Earth-atmosphere system

Infrared satellite image-picture or image processed from radiometers on board a satellite that senses thermal radiation emitted by earth and cloud surfaces of the earth system. Pg.13 Water vapor satellite imagery- picture or image processed from a satellite radiometer that senses infrared radiation at those wavelengths emitted by clouds and water vapor in the atmosphere. Weather radar- An adaptation of radar for meteorological purposes. The scattering of microwave radiation by raindrops, snowflakes, or hailstones is used for locating and tracking the movement of areas of precipitation and monitoring the circulation within small-scale weather systems such as thunder storms Pg.25 Atmosphere-a thin envelope of gasses that encircles the planet. Pg. 26 Nebula- in astronomy, an immense rotating interstellar cloud of dust, ice and gasses Comet- a relatively small celestial body composed of meteoric dust and ice that follows a parabolic or highly elliptical orbit around the sun. Planetesimals-large meteorites a few kilometers across Pg.27 Outgassing- release of gasses to the atmosphere from hot, molten rock during volcanic activity and from impact of meteorites on the rocky surface of the planet: the origins of most atmospheric gasses Pg.28 Photosynthesis-the process whereby plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to manufacture their food and generate oxygen as a byproduct .
