The United States of Europe : by T.R. Reid The United States of Europe by T.R. Reid attempts to explain in clear and simple terms the “geopolitical revolution of historic dimensions” (1) that is currently in the process in Europe. Reid addresses the ever growing power of the European Union through highlighting the various differences that exist between Europe and the United States and showing the effects of these disconnects. While he attempts to remain neutral on the issue of American or European supremacy, it is quite clear that Reid is indeed a Europhile and views many of the European methods (whether it be healthcare, education, or criminal justice) to be superior to the American system in nearly every category. Reid’s examination of those cultural, social, economic, and political differences in layman’s terms causes the book to be extremely accessible to those who are not well versed in the politics or history of the European Union. The book’s strongest point is its high level of accessibility. The book lays out the differences between America and Europe and their evolution over time in a clear and simple manner which allows for a reader who is not well versed on the topic to easily follow and comprehend. Reid’s chapters flow very nicely from one to the next. Like a teacher in a classroom he always assures the reader that any concept that they do not fully comprehend will be further examined in the later chapter of the book, going as far to sometimes even name the chapter in which the concept will be explored. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
