Tasneem Master January 25, 2011 World Religions Western Traditions RLGA02 – Lecture 3 - Rabbinical Tradition: the Judaism we see that exists today o Works through consolidation without having a temple anywhere - Abraham considered patriarch – fatherly connotation o Represents an exemplar – a devout Jew who follows the commands o Sarah is jealous of Hagar having the first child, she works for Ishmael and Hagar to be exiled o Abraham was asked to sacrifice his son Isaac (with Sarah) (in Islam it is Ishmael) – son replaced with a Lamb o Isaac is born through Sarah, believed to be the father of the Jews (Ishmael the father of the Arabs) - Jacob (son of Isaac) overcomes the angels and becomes known as Israel – the one who struggles with God o Earns this name o Spiritually significant o As Jacob is leaving to go on an adventure he sees a stairway to heaven (ominous and holy). He notices there is something special on this sight o As representative of a group of people – refers also of the tribe - Joseph is sold into slavery, becomes a highly skilled - confident of the pharaoh o Chronology in the Hebrew bible is important o God knows what happens from one moment to another o The Hebrews need to get to Egypt ( o Offers everyone in Israel to come to Egypt during the drought o No archeological data - Moses and The Law o A completely monotheistic lifestyle is debatable o Classical figure o Clear prophet that receives clear revelation o
