2I.TopicSocial media has had a profound impact on the way we live our lives since its first inception in 2003 when MySpace was launch. However, when Facebook took the world by storm in 2004, it launched the world as we knew into a brand new culture of communicating withfriend. Fast forward to April 2007, then Senator Barack Obama changed political campaigns as we knew it by tweeting “Thinking we’re only one signature away from ending the war in Iraq.” With this message he began the very first Twitter campaign for president and, in the process, launched one of the first demonstrations of the power of the social-media platform to influence politics and political debate. (Newkirk, 2016) Social media has become a wide spread tool in how we communicate with friends and family, find new job opportunities, and even how we receive political topics. With the recent U.S. Presidential election, Twitter took center stage in the campaigns of both the Republican and Democrat parties. Candidates used the Twitter platform to raise awareness on agendas, spread political messages, and coordinate collective action. With the rise of individuals taking to social media sites, Twitter is a politicians dream to communicate to the masses almost instantly. Take
