Lesson Plan: Phonological Awareness Lesson Title Whole-to-Parts Phonics Instruction: Teaching Letter-Sound Correspondences Grade Level Second Grade Subject Area Whole-to-parts phonics instruction Duration Two 30 minute sessions Number of students 4 Student disability, impact, and learning characteristics One of the students has Autism Spectrum Disorder with limited vocal language; One student with a significant intellectual disability; and Two are students with ADHD who have specific Oral Language Skills instruction needs. Grade level or range K-2 Instructional Content focus Students will learn the skills of discrimination and will learn to listen to determine whether two words begin or end with the same sound. Connection Instruction in speech-sound awareness reduces and alleviates reading and spelling difficulties Instructional setting and arrangement of environment General education classroom with groups split up throughout the classroom during this time. This particular group with meet within the classroom with the resource teacher pushing in to the classroom. IEP Goal with measurable criteria and direct link to lesson Student will know how to summarize and predict what happens in a story in 3 out of 5 trials with 90% accuracy with little teacher assistance. Student will increase sound discrimination through phonemic awareness to 90% as measured by language sample. Common Core State Standards alignment OR.CC.2.L. 2.L.4. Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 2 reading and content, choosing flexibly from an array of strategies. 2.L.4.a. Use sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase. Lesson objective This lesson uses whole-to-parts phonics instruction as an approach to beginning reading. Letter-sound correspondences are taught within a meaningful context in an explicit, systematic, and extensive manner. This lesson uses onset-rime analogy to present word families and spelling patterns. An onset is the consonant letter before the vowel in a given word or syllable, and a rime is the vowel and consonants that follow the vowel in a given word or syllable. Thus, in the word bill, the onset is the letter b and the rime is the letters ill. Furthermore, this lesson supports cooperative and integrative learning where students and teacher learn together and carry out tasks collaboratively.
