They thought it was a cornerstone of society Thought owning a slave was a right they had as an American It also reinforced because growing crops was a part of liberty and having  slaves furthers their crops and helps them out more Northerners said that it was not right to have slaves that we had an  independent society and that we all were free. . Southerners said that the  Declaration of Independence did not say anything about black people or  having slaves so they were not part of being free Stephens, a southerner said that true liberty was not for all people Republicanism had a pessimistic view of human nature a thought only a small  majority should have power to have full liberty 2. How successfully did masters control their slaves values and communities?
