If you do work in groups, write the names of the people you worked with at the top of the homework set. Homework solutions are due at the start of class. Problem 1 (10 pts) . The world population was estimated to be 6.6 billion in 2007, growing at an instantaneous rate of 1.2%. (a) Estimate the population in 2100 if the growth rate remains constant. t = 2100 – 2007 = 93 years N (2100) = 6.6 exp (0.012x93) = 20.15 billion Also, estimate the population assuming that the annualized rate remains constant at 1.2%. That is, 2008 population = 6.6 x 1.012 = 6.68 billion, 2009 population = 6.68 x 1.012 = 6.76 billion, … N (2100) = 6.6 x 1.012 93 = 20.01 billion (b) Estimate the population in 2100 using the logistic function, assuming a carrying capacity of 12 billion. Also, what will be the growth rate in 2100? K = 12 billion r = 0.012 / (1-6.6/12) = 0.0267 t* = 1/0.0267 x ln (12/6.6 – 1) = -7.5 years (i.e. midway through 1999) N (2100) = 12 / {1 + exp[-0.0267x(93+7.5)]} = 11.23 billion Problem 2 (5 pts) . CEE Chair Joe Hughes cited three inevitabilities about the future in his lecture. What are they? What is a challenge associated with any one of these that you would most like to address in your professional career? Write in clear, concise sentences; preferably type, but use legible handwriting if not. Limit yourself to one-half page (typed). Professor Hughes said three future inevitabilities are (1) the human population will increase to approximately 12 billion, (2) energy needs will double in approximately 50 years, and (3) significant changes will occur in the global environment.
