Hadley Acree AC1600892 SC160 Basic Biology Assignment 3 Saturday, December 17, 2016 PROPERTIES OF LIFE A common question that is asked when studying biology is “what is life?” According to Campbell Essential Biology, “ life is the set of common characteristics that distinguish living organisms from nonliving matter.” [Sim131]. There are seven properties and processes that is connected to life. “ Order is all living thing exhibit complex but ordered organization. Regulation is the environment outside an organism may change drastically, but the organism can adjust its internal environment, keeping it within appropriate limits. Growth and development is information carried by DNA controls the pattern of growth and development in all organisms. Energy processing is organisms take in energy and us it to perform all of life activities; they emit energy as heat. Response to environment is all organism respond to environment stimuli. Reproduction occurs when organisms reproduce with their own kind. Lastly, there is evolution, which is reproduction underlies the capacity of populations to change (evolve) over time.” [Sim131] BASIC CHEMICAL TERMINOLOGY Everything around us is made up of matter , which is anything that takes up space. There are three physical states of matter: gas, liquid and solid. Matter is composed of elements. Elements are substances that can’t be broken down into other substances by chemical reactions. There are ninety-two occurring elements. Twenty-five of the ninety-two occurring elements are known as trace elements , which are elements that is essential for the survival of an organism but is needed in minute quantities. Water (H 2 O) and sodium chloride (NaCl) are examples compounds. Compounds are substances that contain two or more elements in a fixed ratio.
