4/4/16 Somatosensory Part 3 Central Pathways Lemniscal is responsible for our fine sense of touch o Recently evolved o Fast system o Responsible for non0noxoius sensations o Dorsal root ganglion carry information to the spinal cord, activating reflexes and sending information to the brain up dorsally through a white matter column ( the dorsa column) to the dorsal column nucleus when meet synapse, where they cross over to the opposite side At the caudal part of the medulla o The information then goes to the central posterior nucleus into the thalamus to the postcentral gyrus( this is the somatosensory cortex) o 2 synapses All myelinated, so this is a fast system Extralemniscal o Anterior lateral pathways o Arise from A delta or C-fibers Slow, small, unmyelinated axons o Also goes to ventral posterior Neospinothalamic is newer o Has synapses at the cortex Paleospinothalamic is older o Has synapses along the way
