Biological Basis of Behavior (Chapter 2) Reductionism Attempt to explain complex phenomena (e.g., human behavior) by reducing them to combinations of simpler components. I. Neurons: How your experiences are communicated… A. Structure of neurons 1. Dendrites: where the information from adjacent neurons is received (& carried toward the cell body). 2. Axon: it carries the information (w/ electrically-charged impulses) away from the cell body. 3. Axon terminals: the end of axon 4. Synapse: where the transmission of the information between neurons takes place. 5. Glial cells: not involved in neural communication but play very important roles, such as removing waste products & foreign bodies. B. Types of neurons

1. Sensory neurons: carry information from sense organs to the central nervous system (CNS). 2. Motor neurons: carry information from the central nervous system to glands, organs, & muscles. 3. Inter neurons: communicate between neurons.
