1984: Book One Reflection Questions From what you have read of Winston in Book One, write a short paragraph (5 sentences or more) description of him. A minor member of the ruling Party in near-future London, Winston Smith is a thin, frail, contemplative, intellectual, and fatalistic thirty-nine-year-old. Winston hates the totalitarian control and enforced repression that are characteristic of his government. He harbors revolutionary dreams. How would it make you feel to see a poster stating, “Big Brother Is Watching You” everywhere you go? How do you think it makes Winston feel? It would make me very uncomfortable, and Winston maybe did not feel comfortable either. Describe the telescreen and its purpose. Would you like to own one? What would be the benefits and the drawbacks of having one? Telescreen is a TV in Winston house and it plays 24/7. Its purpose is to remind you that Big Brother is they’re watching you. No, I would not like to have one because I don’t want anyone watch me 24/7. It would be really creepy. What exactly is propaganda? Give some examples of it from 1984. How is it used in Oceania to control the people? Describe Winston’s first act of rebellion.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
