Sept 16 th What is sociology- Lecture Notes Social System – All of these have rules Economy Politics Educations Family Religion Media Norms- Unwritten rules What is sociology? We are all part of a different groups, like some of us play sports, some play music etc. Sociology is how the group impacts the individual o Looking at how society impacts a person’s behaviour There communities affect their individually, what would they choose? o The community you live in, impacts your decisions Working definition 1. Systematic study of human behaviour 2. The groups to which one belongs too 3. Look at the societies that human beings create 4. And within which the society unfolds Sociology is a social science Study patterns of behaviours Sociology is called a discipline Sociology is concerned, scientific, systematic, informed, look at the world in paradigms- you use different approaches Social sensitivity; we are curious “how others are different or similar to others” “who am I”
