Chapter 2 Motherboard Types 1. Why are motherboards available in multiple form factors? Motherboards are available in multiple form factors because of the physical size, basic layout, power, and the airflow that it has when it is very hot for cooling down. 2. What is the most common form factor used for desktop computers? The most common form factor used for desktop computers is the Standard-ATX. 3. What does the acronym “ATX” stand for? ATX stands for Advanced Technology Extended. 4. How many expansion slots are on typical ATX and ITX motherboards? On a typical ATX motherboards there are 4 expansion slots and ITX motherboards have only one expansion slots. Chip Sets 1. The Northbridge chip functions as a hub. What kind of hub? The Northbridge chip functions as a memory controller hub. 2. What components attach to the Northbridge chip? CPU, Graphic Adapter slots, and memory banks are attached to the Northbridge chip.
