Review Questions 1. What is DNA? Where is it found? DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid refers to the molecules that carry our genetic information. DNA is the basic building block of our genetic makeup. We can find DNA in a range of places in our bodies, such as blood, skin cells, tissues, muscles, bone, teeth, hair, and saliva. 2. What is mitochondrial DNA? Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is inherited from one’s mother and is found outside of the cell nucleus. 3. What is CODIS? How does it work? The Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States uses this technology in CODIS, a software program that contains DNA profiles of convicted offenders, missing persons, crime scene evidence, and other sources. This program attempts to match samples based on thirteen different regions or loci within the nuclear DNA. 4. What are complimentary base patterns? Why are they important? Scientists discovered that adenine (A) bases link up to thymine (T) bases. Cytosine (C) bases link to guanine (G) bases. These pairings are known as complimentary base pairings. These
