My initial reaction to Intérieur (Le Viol) by Edgar Degas is that the painting is extremely heavy, both formally and conceptually. If you can imagine a line drawn from the man’s waist to the woman’s shoulders, everything below that line is a weighty dark brown, contrasting the feminine, creamy colors in the top half. Placing the darker colors on the bottom half immediately conveys this sense of weight in a logical sense. Denser materials or colors sink to the bottom while lighter materials or colors float to the top. I believe it is important to note that the male figure is painted in clothing that happens to match the darker half of the room (in dark brown) and the female figure is dressed in a cream or white color, similar to that of the walls and the bed. The darkness creeps up the left-hand border of the piece, as if it is beginning to swallow the room whole. Whether it was Degas’ intention or not,

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
