David Smetana REL 240 Homework Assignment 3 May 26, 2017 Chapter 5 Question 1: What is the significance of the hijrah in Muslim history? Why is it so important to Muslims? Answer: The hijrah (also referred to as migration) to Yathrib (later to be known as Medina) was known thru Islamic history as the beginning of community life for the Islamic people. Also, the first commonwealth was established. This hijrah dated back at 622 is significantly important to Muslims because the dating system used by their religion was created at that time. This dating system counts the years backwards to forwards and was given the abbreviation AH, as a time stamp as the “year of hijrah”. Question 2: Write a brief biography of the Prophet highlighting two events in his life that are particularly significant to Muslims. In your answer, explain why those events are so central. Answer: The Prophet Muhammad was born in the year 570 into the Quraysh tribe. He lost both parents early in his life (his father passed before he was born). He was taken in by his grandfather and later by his uncle. In his mid- twenties, Muhammad worked as a merchant for a rich widow who later proposed to him. During the month of Ramadan, Muhammad would set out to a retreat and seclude himself in a cave not too far from the city of Mecca. It is to be understood that during one of these retreats Muhammad was called to be a prophet by an angel named Gabriel. After this event took place, Muhammad went on to become the Prophet of the Muslim community. There were many events that took place during his life but two that are particularly significant to Muslims are the hijrah to Yathrib and the the creation of the dating system. The migration ( hijrah
