Daniel Yanes 03/031/2016 Letter of Interest Northeastern University: The American Classroom Before starting high school, I moved from Venezuela to Miami. Anyone would think that living in the U.S. for five years would perfect one’s English, however Miami is different. Here, Spanish isn’t just a language you speak with family; it’s the language of business and culture: it is spoken at major financial institutions, and influences the food, music, and art of the city. Since I live in a Spanish speaking community, and I only ever speak Spanish, with the exception of classes at school, I have struggled to perfect my English. When my older brother applied to Northeastern, he was referred to the American Classroom Program. At first he was angry and disappointed because he wanted to go straight into his studies, but with time, he realized how much preparation the American Classroom had provided him. Likewise, I feel that it is better to delay studies within my major in order to master my English. In the long run, this will make the difference
