Surname 1 ‘Girl’ consists of a structured set of instructions that a mother gives to her daughter. Despite being convinced that her daughter may already be a ‘slut’ she goes on imparting advice to her. There is a certain ironical element in the story. While the mother intends for the girl not to adopt into promiscuity, she seems to have already accepted and come to an agreement with the fact that the girl is already promiscuous. Conflict seems to arise through her daughter’s protests to her mother’s seemingly labeled accusation towards her. The plot has been used through the set of instructions to convey the themes of the danger of sexuality and the transformative power of domesticity. Her mother projects her fear of the danger of female sexuality through her set of instructions. She conveys these symbolically through the use of domestic items (food, clothes and other symbols (folksongs)) by associating these with potential implications on sexualities’ the story.
