HALLIBURTON’S ETHICS Halliburton’s Vision on Ethics Halliburton is a billion-dollar company that works in the energy sector. They specifically target fossil fuels as they drill, cement, and complete just about every task needed for an owner to extract fossil fuels from the ground. This practice has put Halliburton in the ethical cross hairs as their business operations have been blamed for many problems that affect our environment. The oil and gas companies are constantly under criticism for oil spills, well site abandonment, and even earthquakes. I know I know earthquakes seems far-fetched but there have been studies proving that the fracking process of injecting the Earth with millions of gallons of water has begun to cause earthquakes at an unprecedented rate where I live in Oklahoma. These facts would lead you to believe that all is bad and unethical with Halliburton. The truth is though they have visions, ethics statements, and goodwill projects just like any other company does. If we are going to understand these statements and projects though we must begin by understanding who Halliburton is and where they come from in the beginning. Let’s look at the history of Halliburton. Halliburton began operations in 1919 in my hometown of Duncan, Oklahoma. The early years of Halliburton focused heavily on breaking down limestone formations to find easier ways to extract oil more efficiently and expansion across the world. They expanded into off shore drilling in the 1930’s. This feat is incredible considering the lack of technology during this time. They quickly expanded into Canada, South America, and European countries to begin their domination of the world oilfield markets. After their expansion into Europe they then became the first foreign company to complete an oilfield job within the mainland of China. Today Halliburton operates in two different major divisions separated by the hemispheres of the Earth. They have separated these businesses into the Eastern and Western hemisphere divisions. The 2 2

HALLIBURTON’S ETHICS fact they can label their company by sections of the Earth proves the size, scale, and dominance they have been able to achieve during the growth of the company (History of Halliburton, n.d.). Halliburton offers a range of products that are used to complete the process of extracting oil from the Earth. They provide services from geological data, chemicals, cementing processes, and man power to complete these tasks for well owners. They have services to aid well owners that range from the beginning of evaluating a drilling cite to the capping and completion of the oil reservoir (Halliburton Corporate Profile, n.d.). Halliburton also utilizes several different social media websites to help explain their processes, recruit new employees, or explain their goodwill projects across the world. The social media sites they use are YouTube, Facebook,
