P a g e | 1 Evan C. P. Rodriguez Dec. 4. 2014 Old Testament Studies [BIBL 1302] Dr. Boyd A. Luter OLD TESTAMENT PROFILES HOSEA: SHAVUOT Without question, the prophet Hosea had to have had the most emotionally and spiritually involved testimonies recorded within the Old Testament. Upon first traversing these fourteen chapters, it is easy to develop a bias for tragedy as is so often done when observing the closure allotted the audience in Jonah 4:11. Going through a second time; however, I read the words aloud. Though I found myself questioning my own logic in this experiment, it seemed to bring an air of familiarity, posturing myself amongst the promiscuous hearts of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. A third time, I listened to it. What I have surmised through my brief study was not a mere clash of sinners in the hands of an angry God as voiced by Jonathan Edwards, but rather the relentless pursuit of a loving God (husband and father). The character of Hosea himself proves vague. The script which has been given us does; however, give evidence of obedience considering the weighty commands Sovereignly delivered. Our text initiates with the Lord conversing with the prophet Hosea, instructing him to execute a prophetic illustration of God's current disposition with the house of Israel. (A human video, if you will). Hosea marries the prostitute or wife of whoredome (1:2) , depending on the translation, having three children with her. Each child, whom have been born of Gomer, daughter of Diblaim, have quite prophetic, God-inspired, connotations. These translations interpret judgment on the Northern Kingdom. She conceived and birthed a son, Jezreel, which is to declare God sows (1:4) . This was to foreshadow punishment due the house of Jehu. Soon after, she gave birth to a daughter- Lo-ruhama, which meant no mercy (1:6) as the Lord was removing His mercy from Israel, sparing Judah. Finally, a son. Once Lo-ruhama had been weaned, she delivered to Hosea Lo-ammi, meaning not My people (1:9) . Verse ten of the first chapter of Hosea continues to say : “And in the place where it was said to them, 'you are not my people,' it shall be said to them, 'children of the Living God.’” (HOS. 1:10, TLV) Cross-referencing this passage with what I have studied in the New Testament, I then connected this, being echoed by the Apostle Paul during his reflection to the Gentiles of Romans 9:25. God had specifically influenced Hosea's witness to the inconsistency of Israel's people, to herald a prophecy of a New Covenant. One that involved a grafting-in of the Gentiles.

Rather through their trespass salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make Israel jealous.” (ROM. 11:11, TLV) Continuing in Hosea, the second chapter records the unfaithfulness of Israel given the emotional connection with the imagery of brothers and sisters pleading with their mother to surrender to her lewdness (2:2) . Ultimately the prophet Hosea delivers both a promise of judgment and
