Special Education: A customized instructional program designed to meet the unique needs of an individual learner. Using specialized teaching techniques, materials, equipment, or services with exceptional students Disability, impairment, handicap -Impairment refers to loss or reduced function of a particular body part of organ -Disability is when an impairment limits a person’s ability to perform certain tasks, to see, to hear, to walk, etc. -Handicap refers to the specific problem a person with a disability may have in interacting with the environment -Disability is not a handicap unless it leads to educational, social, vocational, etc. problems 2/8 Big Ideas -Majority of students receiving special education services (almost 2X more common- about 70% of students receiving special education are male)

-Majority of students receiving special education services are students with SLD -Most Disabilities are mild to moderate= Severe/ Profound pretty rare -Most of the positive changes have occurred over the last 35-40 years -Students with disabilities are more like their typically developing peers than different -Special education is a set of services that ‘wrap around’ the student: not a thing or a place -Special education is not just “dummying down” the curriculum, rather it is providing supports and accommodations so the student with a disability can access the regular curriculum and be successful= use strengths to address the needs -Most of the definitions of disability are deficit-based, and do not address ability -Special education services should be provided in the lease restrictive environment possible (the ‘LRE’) Interventions in special education -Preventive (Ex: Substance addicted baby) -Remedial -Compensatory Placement paradigm used in most public schools - A= regular classes - B= special classes (could be regular school with special classes all day or only a few special classes) - C= special schools - D= home instruction - E= hospitals and institutions The continuum of services (A closer look at placements) - Level 1: regular classroom - Level 2: regular classroom with consultation - Level 3: regular classroom with regular supports - Level 4: regular classroom with resource room - Level 5: full time separate classroom - Level 6: specialized facility- public - Level 7: specialized facility, non-public, home of hospital based instruction, residential schools, etc.
