Dimensions of European Integration Sectoral integration (BROADENING ) : policy areas that used to be under member state governance come to be regulated by the EU e.g. Monetary Union and the single currency (the Euro) and abolishment of the currencies of the member states Vertical integration (DEEPENING ): refers to the distribution of competencies between EU institutions e.g. Creation of the Ordinary Legislative Procedure and empowerment of the EP Horizontal integration (WIDENING ): territorial extension. A sectoral and vertical integration is applied in a new state, mostly, through enlargement. e.g. Slovakia using the Euro.
