Uses of Minerals, Identifying Minerals, Properties of Minerals Characteristics 1. What are the five characteristics of a mineral? How are minerals used? Inorganic, Solid, Naturally Occuring, Definite Chemical Composition, Crystalline Structure. Minerals are used to give you body nutrients and vitamins. 2. Which object would you use to test for streak? Tile 3. Which object would scratch talc? Nail 4. Which object would you use to distinguish between crystal size? Magnifying class 5. Which object would you use to test for an acid reaction? 5% HCI 6. Which object would you used to distinguish between talc and magnetite? Magnet Classify the following minerals by writing an “s” for silicate (which means it contains silicon), “c” for carbonate (contains carbon), or “o” for oxide (contains oxygen). Moh’s Scale 1. Mineral A scratches minerals E & I, but it can be scratched by mineral J. 2. Mineral C can be scratched by every other mineral.
