In our school, we use what’s called a “themed” curriculum. We come up with a theme for a week, or a month depending on how in-depth the theme is – and we base all our learning from it. For example, if our curriculum for the week is “In the Garden” it would work like this: Math – we would count things in the garden, reading: We would read words that are in the garden, For Art we would draw things that are in the garden. We have found that focusing on a specific theme, instead of many, helps the children learn and absorb what they are learning. The only thing I do not like, is that we cannot go off topic. So, if a child has a question about a different theme – we don’t discuss it but we will somehow turn it into the curriculum we are using.
