Viviana Marquez’s college-application essay is certainly in the second categories. She successfully use anecdote, realism and pathos in the essay to persuade the reader of her need for financial assistance, and I will be analyzing this three rhetorical devices that well used in this essay to make it stand out among others. From the very beginning of the essay she wasting no time to use anecdote to describe what the life like for her every day is. Marquez states that;” There it sits, sullen in the passenger's seat like a child in time out. Here we go again --- someone else's laptop to navigate, another Wi- Fi network to hack, another stubborn connection to overcome’’. (Marquez, 7) However, why she choose this line as her beginning? Because it’s like a mini documentary film of herself revealed right in front of reader’s eyes that helps them to get a better understanding of her current circumstances right away. Let me explain this by giving you a little background about how do we get to know a stranger in our daily life first. Whether we like it or not we live in the world of perception, we are constantly judging people or being judged by others through perceptual knowledge when we meet a person face to face for the first time. To be more specific, we tend to organizing sensory inputs via previous learning, attitude, interests and needs and then put them together into a prejudgment towards one person (Gregg, 4).
