Abstract. This document explains the importance of maritime transport in modern logistics chain of supply and its impact on economy. Also the document illustrates main features of marine transportation in the world, advantages and disadvantages of maritime transport. This article focuses on future prospects of shipping industry. This chapter provides an introduction to the maritime container transport industry. Section 2.1 briefly describes the development of maritime container transport and the observed trends within the last decades. The organization of container transports is explained in sect. 2.2. In sect. 2.3 the layout of a container terminal and the available equipment are described. Keywords: maritime transport, international trade, seaports, goods. Introduction Tankers, bulk carriers and container ships are the most important means of transportation of our time. Each year they carry billions of tonnes of goods along a few principal trade routes. Containerization has revolutionized global cargo shipping, bringing vast improvements in efficiency. The maritime boom could continue, despite the economic crisis. Throughout history the oceans have been important to people around the world as a means of transportation. Unlike a few decades ago, however, ships are now carrying goods rather than people. Since the rise of intercontinental air travel, sea travel has become limited to shorter trips (ferry services across the Baltic and North Seas, the Mediterranean, Japan and Southeast Asia) and recreational cruises. The latter have recently experienced a tremendous boom and represent an increasingly lucrative source of tourist income. As markets became increasingly globalized,
