Wednesday, May 31, y Lowell Mill Workers I. The Textile Industry Work once preformed by a single person creating the whole shoe was now broken up A. Factory Production • With the explosion of the cotton south, (British?) entrepreneurs wanted to get in on this as well • all the machines in the textile was driven by water power -power loom -etc.. • in the NE an abundance on rivers provided a cheap source of energy • America had the right machines but not enough laborers B. The Labor Problem Britain had a more abundant ready labor force not much skill was needed in america where unskilled workers were less plentiful, high wages were needed to attract la- borers to factory jobs in textile, these wages were too high for the industry to succeed 1. Hamilton’s Solution Hamilton suggested that women would make an ideal factory labor source -young farm women -had lots of spare time -wouldn’t undermine the important farm tasks
