Maria Williams MKTG 430 Final Exam 2. Ethics : Being ethical is extremely important to me, as I have seen many instances where employees or coworkers have demonstrated poor ethical standards. For example, we had to switch phone providers from Ntelos to Sprint because Sprint took over the company. When my family went in to switch, the employees demonstrated the three major unethical behaviors we discussed in class. First, they tried to sell us products that we did not need. The employee at Sprint tried to sell us the international data package, something my family would never need because we do not travel often. Luckily, we were informed on what we needed, so we declined the package. Second, the employee showed concern for their own interest, not ours, because he tried to make us purchase a larger package with extra gigabytes of data and other expenses, only to drive up his commission cost. When the bill came, we found out the employee entered extra add on purchase anyway, which benefited his pay. Lastly, the employee gave us answers that he did not know were correct or not. We asked numerous times if our data was unlimited, like our contract with Ntelos was, and if we could use our phones while we were roaming, a benefit Ntelos gave us as well. He replied and said that we could use our phones on roaming with no data charges and that our plan included free data. I suppose that the Sprint salesperson did not realize the toll his incorrect answers would take on my family. We were charged an extreme amount of money for using our phones on roaming and using data to watch Netflix when we took a trip out west. The bill was not something my family wanted to deal with, especially since you must go through so many loopholes to get a bill fixed. The employee jeopardized future dealings with my family because of the deceptive practices he participated in. The company should be aware that the employee could answer the wrong person’s question and create a basis of the bargain, statement that the buyer relied on while making a purchase decision. This employee could create legal issues for the company if he continues. When I transition to my professional career, I will use my experiences to demonstrate a high personal standard of ethics. I will understand my employer’s code of behavior, engage in a truthful, customer- oriented approach, and take blame for mistakes I may make. The primary goal to holding high standards is to always be truthful. Trust is an important aspect for the buyer, especially because most customers are already turned off by most salespeople due to their negative reputation of being unethical and pushy. I will truly have the buyer’s best interest in mind, because like the presenter who sold dress clothes who came to speak about ethics told us, trust, relationships, and honesty will create customer loyalty because the customer truly feels like you care. In the end, customer loyalty will earn you more in
