The Major Players Union victory in April 1865 settled 2 major conflicts  -united states was back  -slavery was dead? many questions in South  B. Fundamental Characteristics fundamental characteristics of reconstruction  key role- truly a national experience  played out in S but affected everywhere  blacks were active players -> turning themselves into full voting citizens of the united states  II. The Meaning of Freedom A. Personal Expressions Ex-slaves expressed freedom in personal yet profound ways  -new name  -new dress -> colorful clothes or hats  -refusing to be deferential to ones former owner  -didn’t give up sidewalk when whites approached  able to travel -> attempted to find family members  work of emancipation was incomplete until families were reunited  B. Collective and Institutional Expressions 1. Education and Religion following war tremendous upsurge in demand for education  knew it was necessary to be literate in order to be active participates  converted old slave markets into black schools -> symbolic  quickly established churches independent of white control
