Genres and Styles [note the links to AllMusic.com: each genre marked with + is considered a meta-genre with links that lead to sub-genres] +alternative/indie rock : a genre that emerged out of post-punk rock and the independent underground scene in the 1980s, covering a diverse range of styles and aesthetics; deliberately distinct from mainstream rock. Baroque pop : a genre that emerged in the mid-60s, featuring characteristics of classical music in the instrumental arrangements and expressive forms. Merseybeat: a style of British pop in the early 60s that combined elements of skiffle (a style linked to early jazz and country music) with elements of early rock ‘n roll. blues rock : a genre that emerged in the 60s, which combines blues structures (12- bar blues, blues scales, improvisation) with rock. Britpop: a guitar-based pop-rock genre that emerged in the UK in the 90s, featuring catchy melodies, star aesthetics and British themes; as it developed into the new millennium, it was referred to as post-Britpop and featured a more mainstream and less experimental style.
