MECH 360 -- Homework 3 1. A 6x4 inches cross-section composite column is made by joining an aluminum half (left side) to a steel half (right side), each 3x4 inches in cross-section. An axial load P = 100,000 lbs is applied at the geometric centre of the composite column. Calculate the resulting stresses and compare them to the stresses that would occur if the column were made of a single material. Assume that the stresses are within the elastic range. For steel, E s = 30 x10 6 psi, and for aluminum, E a = 10 x 10 6 psi. 2. A beam has a square cross-section, and can be set in either of the two orientations shown in the diagrams.
